Ken, let's have some details on that burst! What dye's did you use? How did you mix them? What type of finish did you use?.... Inquiring minds want to know! - Justin

Ken I would like to try a burst one day and would love some more detail on how you went about getting such a great result.

Regards
Craig

Ken, you're getting lot's of compliments considering that bursts are not allowed on the OLF.

Beautiful work!!!!!!!!!

I must've missed that in the site guidelines... ;)

My process for the burst was pretty straighforward -- Before spray-day, I shot the top with a couple of coats of 1.5# cut shellac. We (James & I) mixed our colors using LMI's alcohol-based aniline dyes. Once in the spray booth, we mixed our dyes with some 2# shellac in the spray cup. I should mention that James was spraying the back and sides of his upright, while I did the guitar and a ukelele. Anyway, we started with some yellow, then amber, progressing from light to dark, working further toward the perimeter with each coat, finishing with red/black, then straight black just around the very edge.

Finish is EM6000, which I'm very impressed with, with the exception of a very faint purplish hue in the darkest (black) areas of the top, visible only in bright sunlight. If it weren't for my irrational fear of sanding through the finish into the burst, I would've taken it down more, reasoning that the thinner the finish, the less noticeable the purple tint. For this reason, I feel that my quest for the ideal finish continues.

I believe it's inevitable that I must come up with a feasible and safe way to spray nitro. I'm wondering if there's a somewhat economical way of venting and filtering the offgas from nitro -- I've been setting up a new shop space in our detached garage that would be perfect for this, except that it's about 40' from our neighbor's front door. Of course, there's also the greater expense of explosion-proofing a spraybooth... Can anyone point me towards a resource for info on this?
